Riveting True Catholic Story

I usually kept several read-aloud books ‘going’ at once. We’d read aloud from this and that, and then each one seemed to last longer. I started The Shadow of His Wings in the middle of The Brothers Karamazov, The Good SinnerThe Hidden Face of God, and several others, but we couldn’t put it down. The others had to wait till we read straight through this true story of Fr. Gereon Goldmann’s exploits as a priest-wannabe and SS officer and missionary and conspirator!

With recommendations by Fr. Schall, Fr. Groeschel, and Alice von Hildenbrand, you don’t need me to tell you this book is a must-read. I mention it just in case you’ve missed it, or were putting it off. This is not living history at its best, and I am so thrilled to have shared it with my kids. This business of reading together accomplishes so much more than just getting books read! It knits us together as a learning community and a faith community – with ideas, reality, stories and words well done.

Now, we’ll have lessons from Father G’s life to remember together as an ‘extraordinary witness to the workings of Divine Providence’. Thanks to the Sisters of St. Francis and Ignatius Press for this gem.
